Your Money or Your Life Purpose? Do You Have to Choose or Can You Have it All?

Life Purpose

Many people devote themselves to jobs that they gain much satisfaction from but not true fulfilment. There are also those who devote themselves to jobs that they hate but having no idea of what their life purpose is or how to go about changing. They settle for the job they have come to know, not really knowing what else to do.

Motivation

Why is this? Money might be the first thing that pops to mind but this is not the main reason. The reason is that we all want to have a purpose in life, something to channel our energy into. We will put all our energy into this purpose or another one that we have created for ourselves if we haven’t found our true purpose. Found is probably not the right word in this case as it’s not a matter of finding our purpose. Our purpose is always known to us. Rediscovering what has remained long hidden may be a more appropriate description. So, yes, you do already know what your purpose is and no, it’s not chief chocolate taster with your favourite chocolate brand. That’s your dream job not your purpose!

Does this resonate with you? Are you dedicated to your job, working long hours and putting all your energy into something that isn’t really your calling? What if you redirected this energy into your life purpose, making this not just your job or career but your vocation. Imagine doing what you love in order to be happier, more fulfilled and helping others in the process. Instead of spending your evenings exhausted after a gruelling days work, you’d end the day elated and fulfilled, tired maybe but not exhausted and broken!

Exploration

So how do we rediscover our life purpose if we are not in tune with it? Start by thinking about what you love doing. Write out everything that makes your heart sing. It doesn’t have to be something that is an obvious career. On the contrary, write down everything, without giving thought to money or career. What really gets you going? Think back also to when you were twelve or thirteen years of age. What were you interested in back then? This is the age at which we still dare to dream big but we are also at a point where our calling is being activated.

When I was that age I loved to write songs. I dreamed of being a songwriter but I gave up this desire when I was older, realising that it wasn’t a viable career (or so I believed). It wasn’t until years later that I found some of the songs that I had written down, and reading over them realised that these “lyrics” we’re actually channelled messages from the Angels. I had been communing with spirit without even realising it. I knew the words flowed out onto paper but I didn’t know from where they came!

My point is that what you were doing at age twelve may be an indication of what your are meant to be doing now. If you loved practicing gymnastics, maybe you’d be a good yoga teacher. If you spent your days drawing and doodling, perhaps you’re meant to be an artist or a graphic designer. You get the picture (pardon the pun).

Expression

Don’t get caught up in the process of assigning a title or label to it however. Just enjoy the self exploration and see what comes up. Many of us have more than one calling and many gifts that we need to share with the world. So your purpose isn’t necessarily to be something, it’s more so to do something! The way of expressing your life purpose is up to you. You know when you’ve found the right way of expressing your gifts when you can’t not do what you love to do. When you express your unique gifts each day just for the joy of it, and when time flies by when you are pursuing this activity.

Start off slowly. If you have hidden your gifts for years then you’ll need to ease yourself into it. Begin by doing one little thing to bring out your talent and then nurture it day by day. Don’t feel as if it is a mountain too high to climb if you feel that you are not at the level you want to be at. Everyone has to start somewhere and you might as well start today. In a years time (or less) you could be happily living your purpose instead of just doing your job!
